Bed bugs: how they get into a home and why they come back after spraying

Bed bugs have nothing to do with cleanliness, any home can get them. They travel in luggage and clothing after a trip, in used furniture, and sometimes through a shared wall from a neighbouring unit.

Bed bugs: how they get into a home and why they come back after spraying

What are the first signs?

The first thing you usually notice is a row of bites on skin exposed during sleep, and small blood spots on the sheet. Together these two signs point almost certainly to bed bugs.

Where do they hide?

Do not search the middle of the room, their hiding spots are always the same. Start the check with a strong light along the mattress seams and edges, then the gap behind the headboard, then the joints of any wooden furniture near the bed.

Why do they come back after spraying?

Most available insecticides kill the adult insect but not the eggs, and an egg hatches within one to two weeks. That is why a single round only gives a temporary result before the infestation returns.

What is the correct treatment?

A second round two weeks after the first is what breaks the cycle and kills whatever has hatched. Alongside it, every washable item of bedding needs a hot wash, since high heat kills both the bugs and the eggs.
